Have you ever played a game where every part of the game screamed low budget and cheap, but despite that it was a load of fun? Rainbow Moon fits that bill for me. If you break it down to individual parts, nothing about it should be enjoyable in any way. Put together, it’s an addictive and fun adventure with a battle system that takes some time to get accustomed to.
Let me start with the graphics since that’s the first thing you’ll notice. In the preview trailer above, you can see that it’s a pleasant style with bright colors, but the animation is not quite as graceful. When I first started playing it, I felt that Baldren, the main character, moved in a very goofy manner. I chalked this up to style, but later I just got the feeling that it was more due to the nature of indy games having lower budgets in general. On the PS3, this style looks really bad, but on the Vita it looks a lot prettier.
In fact, everything feels better on the Vita. I doubt it’s due to the port being better than the original, but the smaller screen and lower speaker volume that trick you into thinking it is. The sound effects are just awful. Footsteps are an example of how basic the sound effects are since you’ll hear them a lot. Each step makes the same noise every single time. The default ground/grass sound isn’t so bad unless you’re listening to the game with headphones. Stone, wood, and marsh make different sounds, but most of them become very grating on the ears after only a few seconds of hearing them. All of the voice acting is pretty decent, but since the characters say the same thing every time they perform an attack or special move, I found myself wishing I could turn voices off. I played nearly half of the game in silence while watching TV anyway, but for the purpose of this review, I forced myself to use headphones.
When it comes to the gameplay and controls, that’s where the game shines a bit. The basic controls will seem familiar to anyone who’s ever played Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Ogre Battle games. By that, I mean, it uses the A/B setting and if you’re anything like me, the first thing you’ll do is switch to B where up on the D-Pad makes your character move up and to the right. Other similarities are the way you select and use skills; you choose your skill then an overlay will show you where that skill can be placed. You can’t place it if any ally is in the attack area. What’s weird is that it’s not always clear if you can use a skill or not. Some skills can be used with terrain obstructions in the way while others can’t. Generally speaking, any move where your character charges straight ahead to do a melee attack, obstructions are a no-go. Still, there are a few that work and it’s never really clear if it will or not until you try. Likewise, some skills will move your character on the field, but there’s no way to tell if it will or not. I was also a bit thrown off the first time I used the archer’s skills. A blue zone will appear after selecting the skill as well as a white icon that can move around within that blue zone. That’s normal, but the odd thing is that there’s an orange “target” one or two spaces in front of the white icon. Once you get the feel for it, it’s not so bad, but it’s not intuitive at all.
If that weren’t confusing enough, the way attacking works is completely different than the way skills work. When you choose the attack skill for a melee character, you don’t move an icon to the target adjacent you wish to attack. Instead, you simple push the direction on the D-Pad. Again, the first time I went to attack someone, I attacked the wrong target. They still got dead, bu it was awkward when it happened and it continued to happen a few other times down the line because when you use skills, you hit the square button to rotate your character clockwise similar to how it works in Disgaea. Why they chose to use such a convoluted control system is beyond me.
If you can get past all that, there’s still one more barrier. When you start the game, you can only do one thing per turn. In most SRPGs, you can move then attack. Not here. Here, you can move, attack, use an item, or use a skill. It’s not until level 5 or 6 that you get your second action or “Sub Turn”. I’m much further along in the game with 4 or 5 turns per characters, and combat is a whole lot smoother. Combat is a chore until you get your first sub turn. Lastly, sub turns don’t come at set levels for every character. Each one gains their sub turns at different levels for each character that joins your party.
Finally, if you can make it through all of that, combat is genuinely rewarding. The strategy doesn’t come from the brain dead AI, but from their durability and sheer numbers. At times, you’re fighting 3 on 30. It seems overwhelming, but it really isn’t if you grind hard enough. Grinding is inevitable because the game was designed to be a slow crawl to encourage people to buy levels and Rainbow Pearls which are used to buy stats. I’ll admit that I dropped a few bucks on some of the pay-to-win aspects just so I could push my way through the game a bit faster. Unfortunately, that wasn’t how it worked out. It made me stronger and able to hold my own more soundly without having to head back to town or carry obscene numbers of healing items. I really did enjoy the grind and leveling up my characters, but I enjoy grinding much more when it’s a post-game thing. Getting through Rainbow Moon’s story is excruciatingly slow. I can’t believe how long this game is; perhaps it’s too long.
Another charming aspect of the game is that it doesn’t simply throw you into battles after a string of dialog cut scenes. It’s more like Shining Force in that you actually explore a full RPG world. I can’t even think of an SRPG other than the Shining Force games that actually let you roam about like in a traditional RPG.
At the end of the day, I started off expecting the worst, but I ended up loving the grind after it opened up a bit with more sub turns and new skills to learn. I would recommend it to anyone who’s already beat Disgaea 3, or the other PSP SRPGs. If you’re just looking for a decent grinder SRPG to sink some time into, this game is well worth the price if you can get past the many obstacles that the developers put in place to keep the non-core gamers at bay.
