The sky is indeed infinite and it’s easy to get lost in the space shooter. I’m at a bit of a loss when I think of how to describe this game. You see, it’s hard to not include comparisons to other iconic shooters like Gradius, R-Type, and Raiden. Big Sky borrows heavily from all of these games as well as some more recent shooters like Geometry Wars and Super Stardust. That’s not to say that Big Sky is just a “me too” title. In fact, Big Sky takes bits of each of these games and combines those features into one cohesive unifying experience, with infinite replayability.
I say that it’s infinite, not only because it’s part of the title, but also because each level is somewhat randomly generated. I use the word, “somewhat”, because it seems like there are predefined sections that have a specific type of enemy or pattern. Each stage is made up of two or three of these sections, followed by a random boss battle. Either there are multiple similar sections, or some sections are random while other sections always feature the same enemies with the same patterns. Whatever the case may be, the feeling of never quite knowing what’s going to happen sticks with you throughout the game.
Visually, Big Sky Infinity is all over the place. One minute, you have really nice, colorful cosmos, and the next places you in a dark, twisted demon hole where humanoid space silhouettes three times the size of your ship attack you with flying kicks. That’s right, shadowy silhouettes on a blackened backdrop fly at you, sometimes in large numbers, and you’re supposed to shoot or dodge them. Things like this are, by far, the most frustrating part of the game. This frustration is compounded by the fact that when you’re shooting them, they give no indication of taking damage until they suddenly “pop”. The rest of the visuals have a very relaxing, zen-like feel. The music adds to this vibe greatly, but the vexing announcer takes a dump all over that feeling. While amusing the first few times, I’m thankful that the developers put in the option to turn him off.
So let’s get to the heart of this game. At first, it’s just a simple side-scrolling twin stick shooter. At first, I was turned off by the game completely. That is until I discovered that the “starbits” that I had collected during the stages could be used to purchase upgrades for my ship. Not just for a single stage, but permanently. Just like any grindy RPG, I found myself coming back time and time again, just to upgrade my ship a little bit more. After a few rounds, I had a shield and my weapons charged faster, I had an orbital shield, and I increased my ability to harvest starbits from a greater distance. There are twelve different systems you can upgrade on your ship with each level costing more starbits than the previous, which leads me to the game’s micro-transactions. For whatever reason, the developers made it possible to buy starbits to upgrade your ship. For me, the draw to the game came from incrementally upgrading my ship. I guess some people just want it all right now and are willing to pay for it, but without that constant flow of making my ship just slightly better than it was, I would have stopped playing the game after the first couple goes at it. Maybe it’s the equivalent of having a “donate” button on a successful website, “Buy some starbits if you want to support us.”
I’m back. I got this. Let’s go. So, after I upgraded my ship substantially, I was able to more easily take on multiple bosses without dying. Doing so unlocked a bunch of modes, including Boss Rush and Hell. Bosh Rush is exactly what you would expect from a title called Boss Rush mode; you fight boss battles one after another. Hell mode is almost like playing a bullet hell game. There are a bunch of others that unlock, but only classic allows you to use your upgraded ship. Oh did I mention that each time you play, you only have one life? No? Well, now I did. If only the game didn’t take so long to load between plays, I could play this forever. In the end, Big Sky Infinity is a good shooter with nice visuals and soothing music and and addicting leveling system. It’s priced just right, and worth every penny for old-school shooter lovers.
