• Lost Dimension

Lost Dimension is very good for different reasons you might find in most SRPGs. For starters, the strategy is there, but it’s not exceptionally difficult. You just need to win in a timely fashion to get that S rank that earns you free gear (usually potions and shit). Your allies can die, but allowing them to fall in combat might alter their opinion of you. The main draw to the game is the Danganronpa aspect. The story has your characters, special individuals with unique powers, trapped in a tower that is believed to have been created by a psychopath that calls himself “The End”. When you get to a certain…

I just got back from an all night LAN at GameOn LAN. I’m a PC gamer, but not really a LAN gamer. The owner, Josh, let’s our fighting game crew piggy back on the PC LAN parties for a much cheaper fee since we bring our own setups and gear and it’s just money he wouldn’t be making if we weren’t there. Anyway, always a blast going to these things, and I just wanted to send a shout out to Josh and the crew at GameOn for supporting us the way he has. If you find yourself in the Buffalo, NY area, I highly recommend hitting this place up. Here’s…

  • Mind=0 (Mind Zero)

Mind=0 is has a fairly decent battle system, but quite the lackluster story. My original review of Mind=0 was absolute trash and I apologize for that. I actually confused it with a different game that I couldn’t even be bothered to finish. Please forgive my insolence. So, in these games, I have always wanted to be more compelled to crawl forth in these dungeons, but I’ve been instructed that these games aren’t as much about the story as they are about the challenge and the battle system. If that’s the case, and you love this genre, the battle system in Mind=0 is one of the more entertaining ones I’ve seen…

Last week was the final week of school before summer vacation. It feels great to be free. Last week, I also got a review copy of Lost Dimension. My first impressions were…mixed. I can’t stand the character design for any of the characters. They have a seriously “budget” vibe going on, but once I got past that initial reaction, I was introduced to a very good strategy RPG. It’s as though they combined Danganronpa’s “catch the killer” vibe with Natural Doctrine’s combat system and a sterile white dystopian future aesthetic similar to Freedom Wars. When I say that it’s like Natural Doctrine, I mean that in the best possible way.…

I’m a horrible blogger. I really am. I’ve been slacking so much lately, but it’s not my fault. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and the New 3DS came out on the same day. Up until now, I have pretty much hated my 3DS. There were a few reasons, but the main ones were my particular 3DS hurt my hands, and that the 3DSXL made the games look even worse than they did on their native 3DS screen size. When I say it hurt my hands, I mean that my special edition Pikachu 3DS has a sharp “lip” where the bottom plastic literally carves into my fingers the way I hold it.…

  • Citizens of Earth

Another victory for the VP? I’ll start this off by saying that I knew nothing of this title when I jumped into it. I had not followed the kick-starter nor read any news stories or updates about the game. The very first bit of information that was offered to me about this game was the comparison to one of, if not my most beloved game from my childhood…Earthbound. Now, I’m well aware that rose-tinted nostalgia goggles are a damning thing to wear during the review process, so I will do my best to take them off as often as I can. However, a comparison to Earthbound is a heavy order…

It’s been a little over a month since the last update, so what are we playing at Portable Review? Well, I am still playing Freedom Wars. I have a few new local players I am guiding through the main story and showing the ropes to and I’m still trying to fully upgrade some of my gear, but Oltatum fights are annoying. Aside from that, I have treated myself to a little Christmas present or two. You see, Konami finally released Suikoden II on North American PSN and along with it, they made the original fully supported by the Vita and Vita TV…err Playstation TV. <–Oh yea! I got one of…

  • Jet Car Stunts

Jet Car Stunts feels like the evolution of GripShift with uglier graphics. If I were lazy, that would be the end of the review. If you’re still interested in the game, keep reading. This game is incredibly ugly. Let’s get that out of the way first. Its flat, overly polygonal graphics will not win any awards, but they are functional. While graphics aren’t the strong suit of Jet Car Stunts, the pseudo-physics are. Controling your cars is quite easy and responsive once you get the hang of the two different brakes; one for the ground, and one for arial breaking. Your nitros/turbos work both on the ground and in the…

  • Freedom Wars

First off, let me just say this: I consider myself a relatively competent player when it comes to the “Hunter” genre of games. I’ve got a couple thousand hours logged, between Monster Hunter titles, Ragnarok Odyssey (ACE), both Soul Sacrifices, Toukiden, God Eater, etc. I’m no fresh recruit. Very little impresses me anymore. This game, FREEDOM WARS, has managed to strike a chord with me that hasn’t been struck since the release of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Story-wise, this is your typical anime cliches mess. Main character gets amnesia, has to start over from the bottom rung, yadda yadda yadda. Nobody really plays these games for the story. It’s all about the…

  • Monster Monpiece

I was apprehensive to pick up this title at first. It looked like a good card/strategy game, but it is clearly over-sexualized with the girl-rubbing mechanic. Unfortunately, it is needed in order to level up your monster girls. I’m going to get the rubbing mechanics out of the way as it is really the only glaring flaw to the game. When you rub or tap a monster girl (something you have to pay to do) in the right places, they react with noises and blushing animations. If you manage to please them enough in the given time, the card levels up…and the girls take some of their clothes off. The…
